概要 | esertification has predominantly been studied from meteorological and geographical perspectives as these disciplines significantly influence ecosystem functions in affected regions, resulting in alterations to vegetation cover and plant growth. However, desertification indicators that incorporate the perspective of ecosystem function assessment have not yet been proposed. Here, we assessed temporal changes in desertification using an ecosystem function index derived from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS)-based Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). Specifically, we evaluated desertification in terms of ecosystem resistance during drought periods, inferred using the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI). Our findings indicate that the ecosystem function index declined across various land cover types worldwide. The decline in resistance may be primarily owing to globally enhanced NDVI. Furthermore, on a global scale, a pronounced shift in resistance was observed around the year 2012. |
